This month I managed to get away from the grind for a weeklong Hawaiian vacation, and since I've had good results with DK's European Top 10 guides I went ahead and purchased this edition for Honolulu and O'ahu. It helped make my trip a success, but a freshening would make this Top 10 guide even more useful.
As with other DK Top 10 guides, this one lists various activities, eateries, hotels, and other attractions in a "Top 10" blurb format with accompanying maps and sidebars. For ease of use, the book is broken down into color-coded sections highlighting regions of O'ahu, along with a "Streetsmart" part for planning and optimizing your trip. There's also a small, removable, (awkwardly) foldable and laminated pull-out map & guide for Waikiki and downtown Honolulu with some bullet-point top ten tips.
Once I made it to O'ahu the guidebook suggested good eateries such as Morimoto, Wolfgang's Steakhouse, and Eggs 'n' Things, led me to enjoy a fine Mai Tai at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's noted bar, and sparked visits to interesting attractions such as the U.S. Army Museum and International Marketplace. I was also able to discuss some of the guidebook's ideas with my hotel's helpful concierge, who filled in some informational gaps and enabled me to make solid choices based on budget, transportation, and time constraints.
Although the guidebook suggests a range of hotels (luxury, mid-price, budget), I didn't use it to pick my lodging at the Modern Honolulu hotel - I chose through the airline webpage based on listed amenities, reviews, and a half-price special. However, the Top 10 guide wouldn't have helped with my specific choice, as I later discovered that the Modern is listed under its previous name.
