I should not have to introduce Digger. It won a Hugo, after all.
But in case you didn't notice, this collects the complete Hugo-winning web comic by Ursula Vernon. It is weird, and snarky, and sarcastic, and deep, and epic despite itself, and above all unexpected and entertaining. That's only what one can expect from Ursula.
Digger-of-unnecessarily-convoluted-tunnels doesn't want much of the world she found herself in, but the world has a way of pushing itself on her anyway. All she really wants is 1) none of this magic nonsense, 2) not get killed by acolytes, bandits, hyenas, cultists, demons, gods, and vampire squash, and 3) get back home. The 1) does not happen, 2) does happen but not for lack of trying on the part of the acolytes, bandits, hyenas, cultists, demons, gods, and vampire squash, and 3) takes nearly eight hundred pages. Those incessant acolytes, bandits, hyenas, cultists, demons, gods, and vampire squash are liable to distract even the most down-into-earth wombat. And don't even get her started on the epic quests.
The worldbuilding alone is a marvel here, drawing from cultural backgrounds and folk stories of Transylvania and Africa with equal ease, and leaping with an ease from metaphorical pigeons to details of spotted hyena physiology that only a zoologist would be likely to know. You'll have myths of ancient times come to life, killers who do it out of respect for the victim, avatars of gods and deity intensive care techniques, old family quarrels refusing to die, shrews with diverse careers, young beings in search of identity and hags struggling with image problems - but above all, there is Digger herself.
